Offered for sale is an original Mark IX aircraft compass, used in WWII-era naval aircraft including the legendary PBY Catalina flying boat.
This is an authentic military cockpit compass from the World War II period. The compass remains mechanically responsive and functional; however, it needs compass fluid added (fluid low/dry), which is common with instruments of this age.
Historical Significance
The Mark IX compass was standard equipment in U.S. naval aircraft during WWII. The Consolidated PBY Catalina served in reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, air-sea rescue, and long-range patrol missions across the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. Original cockpit instruments from these aircraft are increasingly scarce.
